About the Library

Organization

The Grant Area District Library was established as a district library on December 4, 2000 by agreement between the City of Grant, the Township of Grant, the Township of Ashland, and the Grant Public Schools (according to MCL 397.171 et seq.). It was formerly established as the Grant Public Library on June 7, 1927.

Our Mission:

The mission of the Grant Area District Library is to provide quality materials and services that allow and encourage access to information that meets the educational, cultural, and recreational needs of the community in an atmosphere that is both welcoming and professional.

Services

Internet and Computer Services:

The Library provides Internet access free of charge to all patrons.  There are 15 Internet stations for use by the public. Each is equipped with word processing capability. In May of 2005, software was installed on each station limiting the amount of time spent on library computers to one hour per day. This is to assure that all patrons have equal access to the computers.

Books by Mail for Homebound Patrons:

Books by Mail is a service available to all residents who have a valid library card from any Newaygo County Library but are unable to visit a library due to a temporary or permanent physical condition, age or infirmity. On completion and approval of the registration form, patrons will receive 3-4 books per mailing, based on their reading preferences. When finished, flip the address card over and mail the materials back to the library in the special mail bag. No postage is required. This service is made possible by a grant from the United Way of the Lakeshore.

Local History and Genealogy Room:

The Local History Room staff is available to help area residents research local history and family history. The room contains old newspapers on CD, photographs and original documents. A grant from the Fremont Area Community Foundation has supplied this room with a computer for genealogical research, a printer, a scanner for sensitive documents, and a digital camera for photographing fragile documents. Ongoing efforts are being made to organize and catalog the material in the Local History Room.

Public Meeting Rooms:

Meeting Rooms at the Grant Area District Library are available free of charge during open hours. The Library offers a large community room with kitchen facilities as well as three quiet study rooms. Interlibrary Loan:

Grant Area District Library is a member of the Lakeland Library Cooperative and participates in the interlibrary loan program. This allows area residents to go beyond their local libraries holdings to borrow materials from any other Cooperative member library. The library also participates in MelCat, the State of Michigan program that allows patrons to borrow materials from other Michigan Libraries located throughout the state.
